How to Setup Email Alert for Newly Created Bug Report in a Project

JT July 24, 2018

We have many testers submitting bug reports simultaneously.

We want to setup an email alert for when a bug report is newly created in a Project.

We use JIRA Cloud.

We are testers and not script writers - we want something convenient without a lot of hassle.

Is it possible in JIRA Cloud ?

I appreciate your answers. However, I should have made it clear in the original post that we are not willing to pay for extensions. It's not the amount, but the principle of the matter. We're not going to pay out additionally for functionality that should already be included in the JIRA product.

Thank you

Hi Jeffrey,

Without an add-on, it's possible to set this configuration only with Jira Service Desk via Post Function.

There is a configuration that you can make, but it will generate an alert for all tickets created in the project, not only Bugs.

You can follow the link below to set this configuration, just change the name of your instance and the project key:

https://yourinstance.atlassian.net/plugins/servlet/project-config/PROJECTKEY/notifications

Then, for issue created you can add a group, role or single user.

Hi Jeffrey,

In this case, you will have to use the add-on Jira Misc Workflow Extensions.

Please, go to Jira Settings > Add-ons > Find new add-ons > Search for Jira Misc Workflow Extensions and install.

After the installation is complete, please open the desired project > Project Settings > Workflows > Click to edit the workflow for Bug > Click on the transition "Create" > On the right side click on Post Functions > Add post function > Choose the option "Email issue (JMWE add-on)" > Add > On the next page, add the necessary information > Add > Publish Draft > Publish.

Hope this helps!
Regards,
Angélica

We use JIRA Cloud = managed service (we do not run our own JIRA server).

We are looking for the most straight-forward, detailed, step-by-step guide.

Hi Jeffrey,

What is the type of the project? Is it Service Desk, Software or Business?

The step-by-step depends on the type of the project, so please, let us know the type and we will check the best option for you.

Angélica

Hi Jeffrey,

Yes, it's possible to set up the email alert for tickets that are opened as "Bug".

If this ticket is from Jira Software, you will need to use an add-on, like Jira Misc Workflow Extensions, so you will be able to set a post function in the workflow and when the issue is created an email will be sent.

If you are using Jira Service Desk it will be easier because it's not necessary an add-on, you will use an Automation, so when the issue is created, if the issue type is bug, then you can add a comment to the ticket mentioning the necessary people, and with this comment they will receive a notification.

If you need further details of how to configure this, please let us know.

Regards,

Angélica
