How to add a group name to "group watch list"

SADAYUKI OKUMA May 19, 2025

Could you tell me how to add a group name to "group watch list" in the present JIRA system? It worked several days ago (just after JIRA changed), but now it doesn't. When I input a group name, it says "No Option".

Hello @SADAYUKI OKUMA

Currently, Jira Cloud does not support adding groups to the watcher or "group watch list" field out of the box. The Watchers field is designed for individual users only, and entering a group name will not work-hence the "No Option" message you are seeing. This limitation has been confirmed by multiple Community posts and is not a recent change, but it may have become more apparent with recent updates to Jira's interface. There is even a feature request to address this - https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JRACLOUD-33736 which is now closed.

Workaround:

Custom Field: You can create a custom field of the "Group Picker" type to select groups, but this does not automatically add group members as watchers; it only records the group selection for reference

Automation or Scripting: Some teams use automation (e.g., Jira Automation rules) or third-party apps like ScriptRunner to automatically add all members of a group as individual watchers when a group is selected in a custom field. However, this requires additional setup and ongoing maintenance if group memberships change

Thank you, Usman.

I'll check above documents.

By the way, I can see some lists in "Group Watch List". What do they mean? Isn't it possible to add our own list there?
