How to copy a project key number

Lex Baldridge June 19, 2025

I am working on a new board, and it has been a while sense I used Jira. When I create a task with sub tasks, they are different numbers. as shown in the photo (ECRs-26) is the task and the sub tasks are all different. How do I make them all have the same number with them (ECRs-26)

Hi Lex - Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

The work item key is a unique value assigned to each work item (Epics, Tasks, Sub-tasks, etc.). Therefore they MUST be unique. However, if you look at the Parent field for each of the Sub-tasks you should see that they are all using the same parent key (ECRS-26 in this case).

Is there a way to have the tasks follow in a sequence? the tasks are populated from a form. However, when I submitted another form instead of being ECRS-27 it is ECRS-30, is there any way to fix this?

There is not a way to fix it other than deleting the work item and resubmitting. Creating work items through automation does not guarantee a particular sequence will be done. You can try putting in a delay between each create work item step to see if that does it.

Hi @Lex Baldridge,

Welcome to Atlassian Community!

Each work item will have their own key, you cannot have work items with the same key.
