How to create a Mulit-Select Project Picker field

David Taylor December 3, 2024

What I want is simple, just a multi-select Project Picker field.  There already exists a single select version.  There also exists a way to use ScriptRunner Behaviors to do this, but it is not available in Jira Cloud.

Are there any solutions for this??  It seems to be an issue that is several years old based on searches, but I haven't been able to find a viable solution.

Hello @David Taylor

There is at least one app that indicates they can provide that type of field.

Multi Project Customfield

I have not used that app before. It came up when I used Google to search for jira cloud multiple selection project picker field

Thanks Trudy. I had already found that app.  However, I refuse to pay a monthly fee for such a simple custom field.  Considering there is ALREADY a built-in single select field for Projects, there should be a solution for this.

Unfortunately there is not.

I see you already found the change request for such a field to be provided natively and added your vote/comments to it:

Hello @David Taylor

If you're not willing to pay for someone else's time and effort to create a solution to a problem that you believe is 'simple', you could of course build it yourself.

You simply:

  1. Learn JavaScript
  2. Learn the Node.js framework
  3. Learn Atlassian's Forge framework
  4. Build your own custom app that provides the solution
  5. Publish it on the Marketplace

I'm sure you'll make it free, for everyone!!

@Sunny Ape  thank you so much for your advice.

Somehow, even without your detailed and super helpful list, I managed to create an Atlassian app using Forge and I'm testing deployment to our instance as we speak.

Your sarcasm does not benefit anyone.

thank you so much for your advice.

You're welcome @David Taylor

Your sarcasm does not benefit anyone.

Maybe, but if you release your app for free, it will benefit EVERYONE, right? Because everyone knows, free is best... right?

Well, except maybe not for the devs at  Innovura, who earn a livelihood from selling their Multi Project Customfield app commercially.

But hey, this is just turning into a morality debate, so let's leave it alone now, OK :)

I don't have a problem paying for Apps, only ones that I can create myself in less than a day :)

@David Taylor I am also looking into implementing a multi-project picker and stumbled upon this well-timed post.
I was wondering if you could let me know how you went about creating that so I can attempt it myself.
Either way, happy you were able to create a solution for yourself in the end (despite the lack of direct help)!

@David Taylor

Since you figured out a solution it would be great if you click the Accept Answer button to mark your Question as Solved.

Since my answer didn't actually provide a solution I encourage you to add your own Answer separately to your Question, and then mark your own Answer as Accepted.
