How to have Jira Board show progress on a work items checklist?

This guide shows to how to have a progress count of a checklist show on the Jira board.
I've been unable to replicate the function on a company managed project.

I tried creating a custom field that is a checklist, but there the checklist values are set when the field is created and not editable by the user.

I missed it was a custom app to install on top of Jira.
