How to implement Votes/Approval by limited members of a Group

Frank Carr August 17, 2021

I am fairly new to JIRA, so I may have missed a capability that it has that can do this.

On a particular set of issues, I have an "ERB Review" status defined. While in this status, I would like to allow members of the ERB to indicate Approval / Disapproval for the issue, but don't how to implement this.

I have looked at the "Vote" capability, but it would appear that if Voting is enabled, ANYONE that can view an issue can "Vote" for it. If there is a way to restrict voting to a particular group for a particular set of issues, I cannot find it.

I have looked at the various transition capabilities but can't seem to come up with a combination that would work. I haven't given up on this as a possibility, but have some experimentation to do.

Has anyone struggled with this problem to success or failure and would be willing to share your ideas? Even potential clues would be helpful.

Hi @Frank Carr, and welcome to the community!

I am assuming your site also does not have JSM because the approval feature in workflows can be enabled out-of-the-box on JSM (more info here https://support.atlassian.com/jira-service-management-cloud/docs/set-up-approvals)

When I had a similar use case for a client that did not have JSM, the simple solution was to create an auto transition in the ERB Review with the condition Users is in Group. The transition can have a screen to capture the Approval / Disapproval in a custom field.

You can also create an automation rule that transitions the issue to the next status when the Approval / Disapproval is informed to the issue.

hope it helps. If this answer helps solve the problem, please come back and mark this answer as solved to help other community members with the same challenge. If not, you are welcome to share your solution as well.

Cheers,

Alex

Hi @Alex

Thanks for looking and providing your idea(s). You are correct, our site (unfortunately) does NOT have JSM.

Would this also work if we were looking to capture MULTIPLE approval/disapprovals? In other words, lets say that there are 5 ERB members and the ERB lead wants to make each issue available for members to App/Dis on each. Then based on that, the Lead would commission work to proceed on those that had the majority of Approvals.

I will take a look at trying to set up (experimentally) what you describe. Thanks for the idea.

           Frank
