How to make status field longer? It is too short.

Is it possible to change the length of status field ?

We have pretty long statuses and it would be much easier for end-users if we can have longer status field.

I'm afraid not, you'd need to dig into the core code in JIRA to adjust the handling, and redesign quite a lot of the layouts.
