How to manage versions in jira when user stories for a release is going as dormant

Hi, 

In our project, we updated fix version to the version number which is due for release in next 6 weeks [our usual release cycle]. 

Some of the user stories and their functionality goes as masked / dormant. 

In such cases, development might be completed / not completed, but testing will be carried out in the release that is scoped in. 

We updated fix version to both current release and next release if the work is spread across. However, we cannot say that it was dormant in current release. 

Is there a way to better manage the versions in our case?
