How to mass/bulk convert sub-issues to issues?

I would like to convert a large number (50+) of Sub-Tasks into Tasks. I know you can do that individually, but, obviously, this would be a bit tedious in my case. Unfortunately, the "Bulk Change" option does not allow for this kind of operation.

Is there a possibility to do so at all, if not through the JIRA GUI than through alternative means (Greenhopper, API, CLI, etc.)? I'm using JIRA 5.1.

It is usually a bigger operation that one can do via backend APIs or database. That is because there are things to be handled during that conversion.

I guess you are left with doing it one by one.
