How to monitor the depth / growth of a backlog over time?

Our users would like to understand the overall size of their backlog (e.g.  # of unresolved items in a project) and how that size changes over time.   I'm picturing a bar chart that shows how many items exist at any given time for a specific JQL query.   Any options for this?   I'm not seeing anything built-in that can provide this info and am open to 3rd party solutions.

For historia data I would look into EazyBI you should be able to use that for more then this need. Another nice plugin showing realtime is GaugeGadget that is free on server.
