How to recover a specific project from the System Backup file for Jira Cloud Software?

Manoj Joshi December 21, 2022

Is it possible to restore any given project from a system back up file which may have many other projects? If so, please share the details.

Thanks

Hi @Manoj Joshi

there seems to be no "out of the box" solution for your request. This is strange because it looks like a common use case, but Atlassian has not implemented it (yet).

I suggest to do the following:

  • make another backup of your site in case you break anything in the following steps
  • restore your old backup that has the required state of the one project you need to a new free instance of Jira
  • export the project from there
  • import the project to your production site
  • carefully check everything
    • if ok, be happy
    • if not, restore the backup made in the first step

Regards

Harald

Hi @Manoj Joshi

What @Harald Seyr is suggesting will work, we have tried that out.

BTW - The challenge I see for you is the volume of data, given that you were able to generate a backup file and download it, that seems to tell me that the overall data set size is small as we have seen backup failures when the data set size is large.

Thanks

Vish
