For JWM project it is possible, but not for software projects
It shows that there are child issues but does not show it as a tree
From Timeline configuration, I have enabled also include child-level issues

I had the exact same issue on my instance. What I did is that I created a new Plan and from now on I only navigate on the plan timeline to visualize the full hierarchy.
The steps are the following:
Configure issue hierarchy:
Ensure subtasks are properly linked:
View subtasks on the timeline:
They explain it pretty well in their doc as well!
