How to track batches (and sub-batches) of product through a manufacturing process?

Tony Barney February 21, 2024

We want to track items through a defined manufacturing process, where batches of product move from station to station (columns in Jira Board). The challenge is that we want to be able to move any arbitrary qty of items from one stage to the next stage as new batches, but retain their connection to the original batch they started with.

For example, we order 500ea of an item from a vendor, that becomes a batch (500ea of item 1 batch 1 in Station1:Ordered). Then we receive 100ea from that vendor; that 100ea needs to move forward to the next state Station2:Received, but the original batch needs to stay behind in Ordered, until the whole batch is received. The new batch of 100ea may need to be further split; 50ea moves forward to Station3:Inspection, and so on.

I tried Child Tasks, but they cannot be moved to stages independent of the parent task.

Hi Tony,

What type of project are you using? Jira Software? Jira Work Management? Team-managed? Company-managed?

Are you only trying to move them on the board for the Sub-tasks? Or did you also go directly into the issue and try to update the status there? Are you using the same workflow for the sub-task as you are for the parent?
