How to turn off log work when transitioning a task from the Backlog to In Progress

I want to mandate my team members to track time properly on their tasks, but when I make Log Work a required field on the screen, when they transition a task from the Backlog to In Progress it asks for a time spent on the task. Obviously they haven't spent time on it at all, but JIRA won't accept 0 as time spent. I know there's gotta be a simple answer to this and I can't find it. I'm new to JIRA administration and I'm all hella confused like the dickens.

Use a Workflow validator for transitions where you want to make sure that work is logged. Then don't put a validator in the Backlog to In Progress transition
