How to use Jira data to create a CSHTML application

I am new to Jira, however I am hoping to create a CSHTML application using Visual Studio to ultimately create a dashboard that will display ticket/issue information via graphs. I am hoping that there is an example on how to establish a connection to Jira that somebody has that I can try to follow? I tried following this post http://maffelu.net/jira-basic-cjira-connection-using-rest/ however I am unable to establish a connection. Any helpful examples would be extremely beneficial.
