How to use duplicate link

Jeroen Vancraen April 24, 2020

Hi,

We have some epics that both use the same story. We connect these stories by 'duplicates'. However I was wondering how to handle these duplicates. Because if I give them storypoints then when they are done the story points are counted 'twice' you only need to solve the story once after all.

Also if I put one of the stories on 'done' the other one should also move to 'done' as it is a duplicate. Any way of doing this?

Thanks!

Hello @Jeroen Vancraen ,

The Epic Story relationship is intended to have the story as a self contains unit of work, with a single parent, and is not intended to split the workload between multiple parent Epics.  Detailed in the Epic tutorial as:

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN EPICS AND OTHER ISSUE TYPES?

Stories, bugs, and tasks are used to describe one single piece of work. Epics are used to describe a group of related issues. Epics can also be a large user story that needs to be broken down into smaller, more manageable chunks. Check out our guide on delivery vehicles for more info.

If you have two separate Epics that both consume part of the story I would recomend setting up each story independently with its estimation to reflect how the work is split between the epics and treat the two items as related issues rather than duplicates, logging work against the parent.

Also check out the following post that are also discusses this and has some additional recommendations relating to using Versions and components on a similar question:

Earl

Thanks for the reply Earl, after we set up our backlog I understood that we misused the epics. For everyone else facing this problem: You can use automation rules to automatically put all stories linked by a duplicate link to done. Which is a quick workaround we're using now.
