A project can only have one issue type scheme.  The issue type scheme tells a project what issue types are available to it.  It's complete nonsense to have many - which one would you use to determine what issue types are available when someone clicks create?  Or what to do when someone tries to change the issue type?

If you want to add a sub-task type to the project, you need to add it to the issue type scheme.  Either add it to the existing scheme, or create a new scheme and then associate the new scheme with the project.

Once you have done that, you will find that you can create sub-tasks in the context of an issue, it's in the options menus across the top of an issue (you can't create sub-tasks outside an issue, a sub-task is a fragment of an issue, not a separate entity)

Hi @Meenakshi G,

There may be quite a few reasons for this:

  • The issue types you create centrally in Jira are only available to company managed projects. If you were trying to use them in team managed projects, that won't work by design.
  • When working with company-managed projects, you must not only create the new issue type, you must also make it available in the project(s) where you want it to be used. You can do so by adding the new issue type to the issue type scheme(s) used in those projects. See this support article to learn more.

Hope this helps!

I am working on Company managed projects only. I already have an issue type scheme associated with that project.
Now i am try to add sub tasks under Story issue type.
