I need to autopopulate the Story Points field with the same value of the original estimate field

Mary Molina April 7, 2022

Dear all,

I am currently trying to find the right automation in my project to auto-populate the story points field based on the original estimate field (which belongs to the time tracking fields). Any idea how can I do this?

I appreciate any help you can provide.
Best,
Mary M

When you enter a value for Original Estimate you are entering minutes and/or hours and/or days and/or weeks to specify time. That is converted to seconds for storage in the Jira database. So if you enter 1h, then 3600 is the value that gets stored.

When you say you want to put the original estimate into the story points field, do you expect the story points field to show "1h" or do you want the converted integer of "3600"?

Hi Trudy,

thanks for your reply - I would like to see the number 1 in this case.

Hello Mary,

And what if you entered 1d or 30m or 1d 3h 15m as your original estimate? The Estimate you enter will include alphabetic characters that specify what the numeric portion represents. Jira will then convert that to seconds for storage in the database.

You are going to have to convert that value to whatever is meaningful for story points for you.
