I want to change the ranking using API (or) is there any other way to change ranking?

I'm working on an application that sets a custom made priority field and I want that to work with the built-in ranking system.

It is very important that the issues also gets sorted in JIRA as well, not only in my own application with my custom made ranking/priority system.  The Current version of JIRA which we are using is V6.0.7
