If I changed my DB to UTF8MB4 should i change my connections string to utf8mb4

We recently upgraded our db and noticed some slowness when going from utf8 to utf8mb4. I was wondering if the cause of this could be the conenction string being set to characterEncoding=UTF8. Should we change that to characterEncoding=UTF8MB4
