Impact of Claiming Accounts (or not)

M Anon July 6, 2022

Hello everyone

So, we're moving from our old Jira on-prem server to the cloud hosted service (free for now while we test but may move to Premium due to some features we require).

Anyway, I verified our domains and have opted to skip claiming the existing accounts for now. Downloaded the CSVs and noted that while majority are Trello users, some of them do have access to BitBucket, Jira Service Desk and Jira Software.

Now, our long term plan is to only use Jira Service Desk and have SSO enabled so that users can log in either with their Azure AD account or Google Workspace (formerly G Suite) account.

Do I still need to claim these accounts or should I just let them go? Normally I'd like to claim the accounts (as they are ours and shouldn't really be used for personal reasons (there are enough free email providers out there they can use).

But if I do claim them, then will I be charged for the services THEY are using?

If the org does not currently have a subscription/license for what they are being used for (e.g. BitBucket and Trello), will they lose their data?

If the org does have a subscription for what they are currently being used for (Jira Service Desk), will we be charged for theirs too?

Do I have the option of claiming accounts but refuse to have their data migrated into ours? Our org is a school and I believe those that have create a site in Jira Service Desk (mostly students) were just using it to explore around the system.

If I don't claim the accounts, how will it impact us (including our plan to do SSO)?
