Integrating several JIRA instance

g.nadareishvili@novatech.ge August 15, 2019

Hello,

I have found some information about this in the documentation but nothing specific so far.

I currently have three Jira Instances with admin privileges in all of them.
All of them have their own projects (Four projects in total).
And they have different people working on the projects so not all the users are the same in these instances.

I want to integrate all three instances into a single instance, so that all four projects are in this one instance without loosing any information, assignments and etc.

Is this possible? And how can I do this?

Thanks

Jira can import a single project's data into an existing instance out of the box.
See https://confluence.atlassian.com/adminjiraserver/restoring-a-project-from-backup-938847691.html

Be aware, that such a project import is primarily concerned with the project's data only, but will not import any configuration (like custom fields, screens, permissions, notifications, users, groups, etc.)
You need to ensure yourself that there is an empty project already in place on the target Jira, and that its configuration matches the original Jira's configuration (same Jira version, same Apps, same custom fields, same screens, etc.).
You could also use third party tools, like the Project Configurator or Configuration Manager to assist you to prepare your target Jira for the project import.

What is usually lost or broken somehow are Dashboard, Boards, Filters and Addon Data.

We often had the challenge that our customers did not want to compromise and lose data due to a migration. We therefore developed a tool that allows you to completely or partially merge Jiras with ease and without compromising on data quality: AtlasMerge (https://www.atlas-merge.com)

Hi g.nadareishvili@novatech.ge

You could use an add-on like Configuration Manager or Project Configurator.

https://marketplace.atlassian.com/apps/1211611/configuration-manager-for-jira?hosting=server&tab=overview

https://marketplace.atlassian.com/apps/1211147/project-configurator-for-jira?hosting=server&tab=overview

Both apps allow you to transfer project configuration and data from one Jira instance to another, refer to the app's documentation for a more detailed explanation of the process. Hope this helps :)

Hi g.nadareishvili@novatech.ge

This is possible and relatively straightforward. For each project:

  • create a backup of the source server
  • perform a project import into the target server for the project to merge

Having said that, there is preparation work required.

You will need to set up any users, groups, fields in the target server.

You will need to create an empty project in the target with the same configuration as the source.

see this article as a starter
