Is it necessary to shut down the database server when upgrading Jira or Confluence?

Hello,

I will be leading the efforts to upgrade both Jira and Confluence but will work with database admins and Windows admins. I have a few concerns that I would like to clear before taking this to production:

  1. Do we need to have a preventive step of shutting down the database server to avoid any data injection during the upgrade process? If we implement that step will modifications still be made in the database via the installation wizard?
    • Note: we have step to stop the application services from the server which will not allow users to log in locally.
  2. Any alternative steps available?

Thank you,

Rehnuma

@Rehnuma Noor The Database server needs to be up and running during the upgrade process.  The upgrade process updates the DB.  This can be values, table structure, etc. depending on the changes that Atlassian has made.  If you are worried about these changes make sure that you are properly backing up your system prior to performing the upgrade. I would recommend following the information provided here: https://confluence.atlassian.com/adminjiraserver/upgrading-jira-applications-938846936.html

I thought so. Our playbook includes taking backups both at the server level and database level. We should be good in this case. And we'll exclude the steps to shut down the databases.

Thanks for your feedback, Brant.
