Is it possible to assign issues without having to open the card?

Marine Redon May 21, 2020

Hi,

I found a topic with the same question dating back 3 years ago, so I thought I'd ask if anything changed since.

During video conference meetings, Jira takes a little while to open cards so assigning issues takes way longer than it should. Is there a way to assign issues without opening the cards? I've checked the keyboard shortcuts, but they only work if the issue is already open.

Thanks.

Hi Marine - Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

Correct, the only way out of the box to assign a card is to open to edit it.

Do you have to do a lot of assigning of cards?  In what circumstances are you assigning cards? Could any of that be automated?

I have planning meetings with my team where our scrum master assigns a bunch of tasks. It's a case by case basis so it can't be automated; we have to discuss each issue and assign it to someone. We can do so just by reading the title on the board though, so it'd save us time if we could avoid opening each issue.

Thanks for the insight. How many different people might be assigned a card?

About 17 I believe.

Ouch - my initial idea probably would not work then.

So one idea is to create a transition from the Backlog status to a new status like Reviewed or Assigned or something like that in the workflow. Then attach a transition screen to the transition that just has the Assignee field.

Then you create a board with just the Backlog and Reviewed columns. Then as a card is "assigned" simply drag the card to the Reviewed column which will cause a pop-up where you can enter the assignee name.
