We are planning to move our JIRA database from one database type to another, using the steps listed here: https://confluence.atlassian.com/adminjiraserver/switching-databases-938846867.html.
Is it possible to test the XML import without shutting down our existing JIRA instance and deleting dbconfig.xml - i.e. just run through the database restore process to make sure that the database has been set up correctly?
Hi, Peter.
We can suggest you do the following for testing purpose:
So I need a new server to host a new JIRA instance, and have to install JIRA again.
OK, that's not what I would call a test restore, more like complete installation.
Thanks anyway.

A 'test' would need to be conducted the same as the actual move so yes, you need to install JIRA on the new using the new database product and restore. I don't understand what you're looking for as a shortcut. I've moved servers several times with different JIRA instances and have never had a problem. As long as you're moving to a supported database product there shouldn't be any problems.

What I'm looking for is a way to validate the backup, and ensure that the new database has the correct settings (collation etc.).
I'm not a DBA and I'd prefer not to have to ask one of our DBA's to work after hours when I'm doing the move.
