When I change status of a task from "Waiting for Review" to "In Progress" I get a popup to add comments. This popup does not offer any formatting options - bullets, bold, headings, etc. I often want to create a more extensive and nuanced comment on a task so instead I just "add a comment" the normal way, with full wysiwyg control, then change the status and get a now-unnecessary popup for comments which I have to dismiss.
After so many years, why don't we just get the wysiwyg controls in the popup so we can do fully formatted comments? Or is there a magical way to enable this I'm not aware of?
Hi @Robert Meador ,
Can you maybe share a screenshot of what your 'comment' field looks like on transition? System Comment field uses wiki-style renderer which, combined with the new item transition experience, looks quite decent and you can use lists, text formatting, uploading files...
I believe even old experience offered these 'advanced' formatting options.
Is there, potentially, a custom field named "Comments" that uses text rendered, which would then reflect this behavior you're seeing?
Cheers,
Tobi
Sure thing. This is what I see when I transition a task to any other status that asks for a comment. You can see there is no WYSIWYG editor.

Thanks for sharing @Robert Meador!
Just to confirm, you're on cloud, right?
Can you check which renderer this field is using as part of the field configuration that your project is using?
So, navigate to Project settings > Work items (if you're using Jira/not JSM) > Fields and find "Comment". It should be set as "Wiki Style Renderer".
If it's not and if you're Jira admin, you could change it and you should be able to have WYSIWYG experience.
An additional note, I'd recommend checking these announcements (as they might be related to whole experience you're seeing/using):
Cheers,
Tobi

Cloud - well, we aren't hosting it ourselves. It's at jira.com. Is that cloud?
So I went to check Project Settings and now I can't even find it. It used to be in the left sidebar when I clicked on a project but now it seems to be gone.
I click "View All Projects", then click on the name of a project, and in the sidebar I see no Project Settings. I don't see it in the main window area (where I see the list of tasks for a project).
That new Transition Experience looks like what we want, for sure. However the instructions to enable it don't make sense.
1. In Jira, select your profile picture or initials, then select Personal settings
There is no "Personal settings" under my picture/icon. There is Profile, Account Settings and Theme. None of these appear to contain anything related to Transition Experience.
When it works I like Jira but experiences like this are SO frustrating...

@Robert Meador cloud instances are usually on atlassian.net domain, but you could add a custom domain and use it for your products/apps.
Anyway, it sounds like you're using new navigation/UI.
As stated in these docs, project settings 'moved' a bit, so try following that. If your interface doesn't look like the one visualized in the docs, please share a screenshot if you can.
As for 'Personal settings', these also moved a bit — try clicking next to your avatar icon on Settings > General settings and scroll down to Jira labs.

Alright - found it. New transition experience enabled and I am seeing wysiwyg controls.
When I go to Project Settings > Work Items > Fields > Comments I see it's set to use the default text renderer, and I don't appear to have the ability to change it, at least not when editing an individual project (and I'd want to change it for all projects anyway). I see my example project is using the Default Field Configuration, so I suppose I'd want to edit that. But if I'm seeing wysiwyg now then perhaps there is no need.
