What is the easiest way to make the resolution field not required on the default screen?

It is not "required" or mandatory in JIRA-language, it's optional, but doesn't have an empty option.  There is no way to do this.

The resolution field should NOT be put on create or edit screens, you should remove it from the default screen and others.  You should only use it on transition screens on transitions that go into status that you want to consider as "closed"

Before you yell "bug", it's not.  It is designed this way.  It IS a massive great design flaw, a hangover from JIRA version 1, and it should have been redesigned years ago in my opinion.
