Is it possible to migrate JIRA Core issues/projects to JIRA Software

The functionality of JIRA Software seems more comprehensive than the instance of Core which was originally purchased by the team. With flexibility for Kanban and SCRUM project management.  

Is it possible to migrate the projects, issues, history and files from Core to be accessible via a new JIRA Software instance we'd purchase?

If we can migrate to Software it would negate the need for Core, which we'd want to close.

Hello Adrian,

Yes, it is possible to move all your issues from a Core project to a Software project.

You can even configure the same workflows if you want to keep the same statuses on the issues or change it to a different one.

To do it, you can configure a filter to return the issues of your Core project and use the Bulk Operation feature. Then, select all the project issues and click move issues:

Hello,

You can upgrade your current Jira Core installation to Jira Software and then change all projects to the Software project type. It is done in the detail project view.

There are thousands of issues (legacy and new) and hundreds of projects so can I do this as a BULK update? With the legacy issues showing the history of projects and tasks. 

We also have a linked Confluence to the Core instance as well. So again easy to switch.

The most notable feature of Jira Software is boards. You can create boards for Business projects as well. I guess all your projects are now Business projects.

but only on Cloud. No Jira Core boards on server.

If you have Jira Software you can use boards for Business and Jira Software projects. It does no matter.

You're misunderstanding the build of the system.   Jira Core provides issues, workflows, projects, users, a plugin framework and so-on.  Jira Software is an application which runs on top of Core, giving you additional functionality.

You can't run Software without Core underneath it.

It sounds to me like you are thinking of installing a new Jira Software service and migrating issues from an old Core-only install.

You can save yourself a LOT of work by doing it as intended.  Just install Jira Software on the current Core installation.  No migration or new servers needed, you will just want to flip the projects over to Software ones.

The concern was that I would need to support two licenses and double my costs. If by migrating/using Software I only need one license then this makes it even easier to build a business case to undertake the work with senior management.

Hi Adrian,

a user having a Software license doesn't need a Core license. There are no Core features which are not part of Software. So you will have to install the Software application on your Core server, buy some Software licenses and add them to the users who should be allowed to use boards. You might want to reduce your Core license count, then...

Thanks for this JP, we are using Core Cloud version - which was why I was looking at how I can upgrade Core (Cloud) to Software (Cloud). The hope was it would be as simple as selecting an "upgrade" button, the license costs would remain the same and all the existing projects would immediately be available with the extra functionality - all working perfectly first time.  (I'm sure I won't find it that easy though... ). All this information is helpful, so I'll keep digging today.
