Is it possible to show the desciption of the columne or status on Kanban board?

Julia Seeck February 5, 2020

Hi There,

I use Jira with a project group that has never worked with Jira before. I would like to make it easier for them and I want to show the description of the status in the Kanban board. Is that possible?

Hi @Julia Seeck

There's no standard method to add a description of the status on the board itself (i.e via the columns or similar) - see this suggestion to improve this: JRASERVER-63415

But, the hover-over does work for statuses on the issue detail view much like it does on a normal issue view - so for example:

  1. Go to Jira Settings (as a Jira Admin) > Issues
  2. On the left-hand side, select Statuses near the bottom under "Issue Attributes"
  3. Select a status and press "Edit"
  4. Under the field "Description", describe the need for this status and what it represents, then press Update
  5. On the board, click on an issue to open the issue detail view (which appears on the right-hand side)
  6. Hover over the status, and it will provide the description you entered in step 4 for a user to read and see the reason for that status.

Some statuses already have a description by default - but this way you can edit these for your company's user case, or add new ones for custom statuses.
