We are using components. We see the need to have a also subcomponents. But I do not see how this can be done without a app.

As a workaround, you can use a custom field to simulate subcomponents in Jira.

True, that is a possible workaround, but it doesn't offer the same functionality as Jira Components do (component lead, default assignee)
