Is there a way to make fields in Jira issues completely invisible?

Asier Vadillo August 21, 2025

Hi everyone,

I’d like to know if there is a way in Jira Cloud to make some fields completely invisible in issues.

The only method I’ve found so far is to add the field to the screen and then move it to the “Hide when empty” section in the screen configuration. That works as long as the field is empty, but if the field has a value, it becomes visible to users.

What I’m trying to achieve is:

  • A field that is used for internal or automation purposes.

  • It should never be displayed to end users, regardless of whether it has a value or not.

Hello @Asier Vadillo

What is the scenario for your rule?

I'm thinking that a possible work around (I haven't tested this) is to use the Transition action in the rule to execute a looping transition and set fields at the same time.

As I said, I haven't actually tested that.

My original idea was to actually add a looping transition in the workflow, and add to it a Transition screen that has the fields you want Automation to manipulate. Then set a condition on the transition to hide it from all users, and execute the Transition through the Automation Rule.

I'm not sure if the "Same status (loop)" option available in the has the same effect as adding the transition to the workflow without having to actually add the transition to the workflow.

And I have not confirmed that the rule can set the fields in either scenario if the fields are not included in the layout.

If you need to use the field in an automation it has to be on the screen/layout. Any fields that are not on the screen/layout are not available in an automation.

So my best bet is the "hide while empty" category.

Thanks!
