Is there any way to clear resolution/resolutiondate other than Workflow post functions?

Clayton Taylor December 22, 2023

I am a project admin on a large enterprise account of Jira Data Center (and other Atlassian products). We have been looking for ways to manage as much as possible from Automation or the Jira REST API to empower project admins and avoid the need to involve sys admins. This has become very expensive to centralize so allowing project admins to control their projects helps us a great deal.

One of the issues we are currently facing is the ability to resolve and unresolve issues.

  1. First, it is currently possible to set the Resolution field via Automation, but doing so does not resolve the issue or set the resolutiondate. In other words, it is only useful as an action when the issue is already resolved and you simply want to change the Resolution from one value to another.
  2. Second, there does not appear to be a way to clear the Resolution field at all via Automation or the REST API. Some people claim to have luck by using the Advanced option and settings the object to null when editing issues in Automation, but I believe they are all Cloud users.

Is there a current option that we are unaware of? If not, is this something that is planned on Atlassian's side?

I dont' use automation. The behaviour is anytime the resolve field is displayed on an editable screen it must be set if it isn't already. In a post function you can set it, update it or clear it. You can't clear it in an editable screen.  Based on this, if your automation is transitioning an issue in the workflow you can, but not if you are just trying to edit the screen not involved in the transition.
