Issue import mapping and formatting errors

Mike Lepine July 6, 2021

Hello. We're attempting to import a CSV issue list from another company's Jira instance. It's a scrum project. The errors are related to the following:

  1. Team-managed vs. company-managed. When importing as team-managed, the issue fields such as attachment and comment can be mapped from the import file. If company-managed project, those fields are unavailable to be mapped correctly.
  2. The imported text loses formatting. In description and comment fields, the formatting is removed and the result can be difficult to decipher.
  3. Even though attachments are URLs in the CSV file, attachments are being imported correctly.
  4. Dates are inconsistently formatted and the creation/edit dates are being lost.

Any suggestions to resolve the import issues we're experiencing would be greatly appreciated.

Hello @Mike Lepine

Are you using the Import feature available from the Advanced Filters screen, or the import feature available through the Settings > System > External Issue Import?

Regarding #1, Attachment and Comment are available for mapping if you are using the CSV import option available under External Issue Import.

Regarding #3, do you mean the attachments are not being imported correctly? Are the URLs publicly accessible? The destination system must be able to access those URLs without authentication being required in order to get the attachments.

Regarding #4, with CSV import, the creation date and last updated date of the issues will be set to the date/time at which they are imported. I don't believe you can actually override that information during the import process.

Hi @Trudy Claspill

I think which import was being used was part of the issue. Originally used the Settings > System > EII and subsequently was using the one from the filters screen. Now we're consistently using the former.

  • Now comments mapped and imported correctly.
  • Logically, that makes sense on attachments; however, it would be nice if credentials could be supplied to the import process. Having public access to a Jira instance seems rare.
  • Dates  (creation, comments, etc.) seem to be correct now that I set the date format to the default.

The formatting of some of the descriptions and comments has been lost but otherwise, most everything appears to have imported correctly (minus attachments).

Thank you for replying. It was extremely helpful.
