Why do some of my Epics not show the expand / collapse icon? I have checked the epics and they do have stories, tasks etc as child items (so not at subtask level) - but there is no expand / collapse icon to show these.
Steps to Replicate
Create a timeline in JIRA, and add the filter "C24"
The result show as follows, where two out of the six items do not have the expand / collapse option, and all "Type" options are deselected by default
When I then select all "Types" options it displays only the items with the expand / collapse option. Given Epic A and Epic D do have Stories and Bug tickets etc - why do they not show on this list with the expand / collapse button?
Note all epics and tickets created at story level are from the same JIRA board.
In the screenshot, I have noticed that you have filter configured for labels, try to remove that filter and see if you are getting the option
Yes I have removed the filter, and I still get the result of some epics with expand / collapse and some epics without expand collapse (all the epics have child items so I am expecting to see expand / collapse options)

Hello @Toni Campbell
Did you create a Plan through the Plans menu, and is this the Timeline associated with that Plan?
Or is this the Timeline associated with a Board?
Does the filter include the child issues under those two Epics?
Are the child issues in the same project as the Epics?

Hi @Trudy Claspill
For this instance of Jira - plans is not activated / not a feature we are able to use.
I created a timeline from the JIRA board.
Does the filter include the child issues under those two Epics? The filter is by a label called "C24" that label is on the epics only (for ALL six Epics in the list).
Are the child issues in the same projects as the Epics? Yes

Hello @Toni Campbell
Thank you for that additional information.
Your post tags say that your Product Plan is Premium. The Plans (a.k.a Advanced Roadmaps Plans) functionality is part of that Product Plan, though you may not have been granted access to it.
The lack of selection under the Types pull-down means that all issue types are being included.
What type of project is this concerning? Get the project type information from the View All Projects page under the Projects menu.
If this is for a Software project, is the board a Scrum board or Kanban board?
Do I understand correctly that when you say "add the filter" you mean that from the Labels pull-down above the Timeline you selected "C24"?
If you clear the Labels filter do you get the expander buttons for those two Epics?

Thanks @Trudy Claspill , my company has multiple subscriptions to JIRA, the instance I am using for this issue is not on Premium. But on the instance that I do use for Advance Roadmaps, I do still experience the same issue.
It's a scrum board, and yes you are correct re adding the filter.
If I clear the labels filter I just get a longer list, some with expand/collapse options, and some without (so issue remains).
In the interim, I have also added the "C24" labels to not only the epics, but to the child items as well (i.e. story , tasks). This is my workaround for now.
Appreciate your feedback so far.

It has been my experience that when those filters are used in the Timeline then only the issues that match the filter will be shown in the timeline. If you have a paren that matches the filter but some or all of the children under it do not, then the children that do not match the filter will not be shown.
Is that not what you are experiencing?
I don't see a change request in Atlassian's public backlog asking for the filters to be applied only at the Epic level. You could use the Feedback option within Jira to provide feedback about that directly to Atlassian.

Thanks Trudy, yes it's strange . Because I can apply the filter C24 where only the epic and not the child items have this label, and for some of the epics they show the expand / collapse to see the child items and for some epics they don't show the expand / collapse.
So my experience is not as per how you describe.
Sure I will look at the option to add feedback via the public backlog
