I am trying to install JIRA on Linux server(open suse 11)
Is it possible to have JIRA installed
on Linux server ( Open Suse 11) and the
backend database Microsoft SQL server 2008 R2.
Is this a viable configuration.

Hi Bill,
The answer to your question would be yes and it is doable. You need a two different machine one running linux where the JIRA instance would be installed and another machine which runs on windows where your database will be stored.
You need to ensure that the port MSSQL is listening mode on the port 1433 and also add the inbound connection open for the port 1433 in your firewall. During the JIRA Installation, on your Linux machine, choose your own database and provide the credentials for the MSSQL Server.
Make sure the port on windows machine is properly opened for the JIRA to be able to connect to the database.
It's doable. Do note that MS SQL Server will have to be on a separate Windows server that has connectivity to the JIRA server.
