JIRA restart lead to lost data.

support June 20, 2018

Ever since I tried to set up confluence (and failed) JIRA has been occasionally crashing. Each time I just restarted JIRA and it seemed to be working fine. But today after restarting JIRA it crashed again and froze the whole server (something about being out of RAM i think). I rebooted the server and JIRA started, but all the changes made in JIRA(issues, comments, etc.) for the last five days have been lost.

We tried rolling back the server to a snapshot from yesterday and also the day before yesterday, but the data is still gone!

Is the data lost?

Why did this happen?

How can i prevent this from happening in the future?

Can you just try doing a reindex? The data might still be there but the search results might be outdated.

We tried that, but it didn't change anything.

That is really strange. You should never miss 5 days of data. Especially if you tried restoring from a backup. Are you sure JIRA is still connected to the correct DB?

The database settings haven't been changed.

The only way you can have five days data go missing is by restoring a database from a backup taken five days ago, or you've been working with a different database.

Jira does cache data before writing it to the database, but you're looking at fractions of a second, not days.
