JIRA workflow metrics question

Is there a way to determine how many times each JIRA issue went through a specific Workflow stage? For example, an issue goes through the "On Hold" workflow stage many times during the live of the issue. I need to know how many. I know that this information available by browsing issue's "Activity" section, but that means one has to manually go through all activity or History log. I was hoping that there might be a query that would accomplish this. I'd greatly appreciate assistance in this matter.

Yes there are several ways of doing it using apps, scripts or REST API.
