JQL to filter out old accepter stories

Alex Tartakovsky October 22, 2021

Hi - is it possible to create a filter which returns back everything EXCEPT those stories (issues) that are Accepted AND have been accepted for more than 30 days.  In other words, I do NOT want to see stories that have been accepted a long time ago to still show up on the board.  I am using Agile Scrum board - I know that this feature exists on Kanban board.

Thanks in advance!

Hello @Alex Tartakovsky

What is your definition of "Accepted"? How do you determine if a story is Accepted?

Are you referring to the feature in the Kanban board under Board Settings > General that allows you to hide completed issues?

On a Scrum Board this option is not available. For a Scrum board the "completed" column is cleared by completing the sprint.

You could add a Quick Filter to hide the display of the issues in the Scrum Board, but to advise you on creating that we must first understand what you mean by Accepted and how you indicate that a story that is Accepted.

Hi Trudy,   I would like to try to stick to the agile board (not Kanban).  Is it possible to add that into the main filter?   This way the old accepted ones will fall off for everyone?   Does this mean that I need to change the Workflow?  ...because our Workflow does not have a "completed" status?  ...so if there is no completed status than how would it ever fall onto completed column?

Our Accepted definition means that a story has been coded, approved and deployed.  So if they have been deployed for over 2 weeks, I don't want to see them on the board.  But the newly deployed stories -- < 2 weeks -- I do want to see them...

Hello Alex,

First, "kanban" is another form of the "agile" methodology. Both the Kanban and the Scrum boards are "agile" boards.

Second, please explain what "accepted" means for your issues in terms of the Status you assign to these issues on which column in your Scrum board that Status is mapped to. Is that Status value mapped to the column that is farthest to the right on your board?

Third, how long are your sprints for your Scrum board? Are they longer than two weeks?

If an "accepted" issue is set to a Status that is mapped to the column farthest to the right on your Scrum board, then when you Complete you Sprint the issues should be getting removed from your board. Is that happening? If that is happening correctly, but your sprints are longer than 2 weeks meaning the older accepted issues show on the board longer, have you considered shortening your sprints to 2 weeks?

If you modify the filter for your board to exclude the older accepted stories, then when the stories reach that age they will no longer be considered part of the board or the sprint by the built-in agile reports. If you commit to 6 stories for your sprint, and by the end of that sprint 2 of the stories were "accepted" (i.e. completed) more than two weeks in the past, then all your sprint, burndown, and velocity reports will show there were only 4 stories in that sprint. Modifying the filter for the board affects what issues are included in that board, and the reports for the board will include only the issues that are included in the board. Also, historic reports would be affected. So, all your older sprints where issues were completed more than 2 weeks ago will change to show that those issues are no longer considered part of those old sprints.
