Jira Administrator Permissions

David Murphy August 29, 2019

I have users who want more than Project Administrator permissions, e.g., they want to be able to create projects (classic), etc. None of them know much about tool administration so I am concerned that making them a Jira Admin is giving them enough rope to hang themselves with.  Should I be concerned?  Is there another way to administer permissions so they can do what they need to do while maintaining the integrity of the jira tool?

Yes. Lock the doors and throw away the keys. :-)

seriously, it is not a good idea to open up the doors and allow multiple people to have full admin rights. Creating “classic” projects has become more complicated and needs a watchful eye IMO. If you are on Cloud the you might consider allowing users to creat Next-gen projects on their own as they are self contained and easier to setup.

I am on Cloud, and in this particular case, the user wants to create a "classic" project.  out of curiosity, what permission has to be setup to allow the creation of next-gen projects?  I got the impression that was already available, but I am not sure.

By default NG permissions should be on. You can enable/disable under the Jira Settings area. I’m not where I can check the exact location but it is pretty easy to find.

Hello @David Murphy

I agree with @Jack Brickey  but what you can do instead if that, You can talk to the users, and create the projects for them, and then grant the access for that specific users, to do whatever they want on that specific project, also this won't affect other projects. You can also create a "test" project and let them get familiar  with the administration part, but there's a lot of work to learn everything.. so

Good luck!  :D
