Jira Product Discovery: how to change the matrix view sorting of cards?

Kevin Ulland December 18, 2023

We're using the matrix view to visualize Value vs Effort, but the sorted list of cards on the right doesn't seem correct. We have two items with the same Value, but different Efforts, and I would expect that in that case, the Idea with the LOWER Effort would be at the top of the list? Because it makes more sense to do the easier thing first? That's the point of a matrix view.

There's also an item with a Value of 40 but Effort is 5, and an item with Value of 47 but Effort is 3. Shouldn't 47 / 3 be sorted higher on the right than 40 / 5?

Just wondering if we're missing a setting on our Matrix views to fix this?

Hi @Kevin Ulland

There is no indication in the help pages of the idea order on the right-side of the Matrix View: https://support.atlassian.com/jira-product-discovery/docs/what-is-the-matrix-view/

My quick experimentation shows it appears to be the built-in Rank ordering of the ideas, as they are displayed on a List View with no sorting selected.  That may also be why the drag-and-drop within the list is disabled: it would lead to more confusion if ideas are draggable on the 2x2 view and within the list.

If someone from the Atlassian team has more information perhaps they will respond also.

Kind regards,
Bill
