Jira card shows up as "Unassigned" even after entering the assignee when creating a Epic or task

When someone on my team creates a new epic or task in Jira, they select themselves as the assignee before saving it. However, after the task is created, it shows up as “Unassigned” instead of showing the person they selected.

Because of this, I have to go back into Jira and manually assign the task again. This is time-consuming, especially when there are many tasks. In some cases, I’m not even able to assign the task manually at all, which causes delays and confusion in tracking who is responsible for the work.

I’m not sure why this is happening, and it would be helpful to understand the cause and how to fix it.

Hi Hemanth,

Welcome to community :)

Please also check if this is something related to this : https://support.atlassian.com/jira/kb/issues-created-gets-unassigned-intermittently-despite-having-percent22default-assigneepercent22-set-for-the-project/

Or any workflow conditions set in the project which leads to this.

Thank You,

Prachi

Hi @Hemanth Reddy

Kindly check the causes listed below.

  • Project permissions issue – The team might not have permission to assign issues.

  • Assign field not on the Create screen – Even though it looks like they chose someone, Jira might not be saving it.

  • Default assignee is set to "Unassigned" in project settings and it overrides the selected user.

  • User is not part of the project – If the person isn’t a member or doesn’t have the right role, Jira won't let them be assigned.
