Jira cloud xray tests show up in backlog, cannot exclude xray issue types from filter

I've read a couple of responses to questions where people have had issues with testcases appearing in the Jira backlog.  The solution seems to be to exclude the xray issue types from the project board settings.  However, when I try this, the JQL does not recognize "issuetype" or "issue.type" or "issue type" or any other permutation I could think of.  Here is my JQL: project = CAE AND issuetype != "Test (Xray)" ORDER BY Rank ASC

Any help/suggestions/guidance would be greatly appreciated!

"issuetype" is the correct field name to use in JQL to set a criteria on the Type (Story, Task, etc.) of the issues.

Are you getting an error in the evaluation of your JQL, or are the issues just not being excluded from the results?

If the latter, navigate to

https://<yourJiraUrl>/jira/settings/issues/issue-types

...and confirm that you have gotten the correct name for the issue type.

Also, have you tried the JQL in the Search Issues screen to see what it shows for results?
