Jira upgrade from 6.4.12 to 8.2.3

We have to move our Jira Projekt (incl. data) from 6.4.12 on a Windows 2k8 Server to a new W2k16 Server.

In these case we want install on the new server directly Jira with version 8.2.3.
Do we have to upgrade first the old Jira installation to version 7.x and or 8.x, before we can do an XML export from old system to the new W2k16 Server with Jira 8.2.3?
Or do's it  work ordinary from Jira version 6.4.12?

Which other steps do i have into consideration

The DB is running on a MS SQL 2102 Cluster.
