Kanban Backlog view: subtasks don't move when I drag story to "Selected for Development"

Matthieu Cornillon November 20, 2019

Trying out the Kanban Backlog view.  Here's what I did:

  • Enable backlog view.
  • Go to backlog view.
  • Create story in the backlog section.
  • Add two subtasks to that story.
  • Drag the story to the "Selected for Development" section.
  • Actual Result: The story moves, but the subtasks get left behind.
  • Desired Result: The story moves and the subtasks "stick" to it, also moving to the Selected for Development section.

Any ideas?

Hello @Matthieu Cornillon

Thank you for reaching out.

In Kanban, the transition of issues from backlog to selected for development (In the active board view) is basically a status change in the issue. Unfortunately, Jira does not have the functionality to automatically update the status of the sub-tasks when its parent its transitioned, however, we understand how useful this option would be.

That being said, we created the following feature request to implement this functionality:

Auto transition Sub-Task when the parent issue transitioned in a workflow.

Feel free to vote and watch the suggestion to increase its priority and also receive notifications about any updates.

For now, there are some plugins you can use some apps to achieve this functionality. For JIRA Cloud, I suggest you use the free version of the app Automation for JIRA to create the following rule:
