We have a Jira issue type called "Release", which we use to manage the release process. We've created several automation rules which we would like our users to be able to run manually, but we only want it to appear in the "Actions" menu for this "Release" type of issue. Is there any way to do this?
I know one "hack" would be to create a custom field, lets call it "linking", and a workflow transition which simply sets the "linking" field, and keeps the status of the issue the same. Then we would attach the trigger of our automation to the change in this field, and then have the field updated when it is done.
I wish there was a way of running an automation rule directly from a transition, but last time I checked that was not available.
Any ideas?
That is not possible at this time. There is a suggestion to make what appears on the Actions list be configurable, which you may watch/vote for here to see progress:

All is still the same unfortunately.
You basically provided your own solution, that’s the one I would suggested to you also.

I would rather be able to call automation rule directly from a workflow.
Then you get all of the features and security that comes with workflows.
I’d use automation workflow triggers, but those are broken because you can only attach them to state changes not specific transitions (by transition name)
