We know that we can link Jira issues to a confluence space via the copy link shortcut but was wondering if there is an easier way to update both instances at the same time
I.e If we add an epic to a project, can it auto populate into the product requirements template without copying the link, or if we update the product requirements can it be created as a epic on the project?

depending on your Confluence setup there are two slight different implementation, so here the two options with the latest Confluence versions. You reach this (orange marked) menu when you in the edit mode of the page.
When your Confluence runs on local server (within your company):
(BTW, there you see an already embedded Jira issue, in the edit mode you don´t get the issue details)
And when you Confluence runs in the "Cloud" (outside your organization):
