I am trying to use a Jira Ticket ID extracted from the Notes field (captured via Smart Variable definition) I can use the variable to write into the comments field but automation won't use it to update the Linked Issues field. The automation returns an error message:
(Issue does not exist or you do not have permission to see it., You must provide one of 'inwardIssue' or 'outwardIssue'. (issuelinks))

Solved the problem; there were invisible spaces that some aspects of Jira could handle (e.g. the Notes and Comments fields but the Linking issues couldn't when these were removed as part of the variable creation then it worked fine
