Linking fields between linked issues

indya kachela July 5, 2022

Hi everyone.

We currently have linked issues set up.

I was wondering if it was possible that when we update a field in one issue, it can automatically update the same field in the issue it is linked to.

Eg. I have a Jira ticket test-123 that is linked to ticket practice-456. I fill in a field on practice-456 and the same field in test-123 becomes filled in with the same information.

Is this possible? :)

Hello @indya kachela and welcome to the Community!

Thank you for clarifying that you use hosting. As @Craig Nodwell mentioned, you can use an automation rule to achieve this functionality. I've included a screenshot below of what an example configuration would look like.

Simply put, I'd choose the following:

Trigger: Field Value Changed - select the field that you want to monitor for changes:

Then, choose "Branch Rule/Related Issues" so you can comb through any linked issues to apply the automation rule to. You can choose which link types to search against for your automation rule:

Then, choose the "Edit Issue" action, choose the field that you want to update, then select "Trigger Issue" which will copy the value from the issue that triggered the automation rule and apply it to the linked issues for the particular field.Screen Shot 2022-07-05 at 9.12.45 AM.png

Hope this helps!

Sorry, we are a data centre! Does that make much of a difference?

It shouldn't, Automation for Jira is included in Data Center - have you tried configuring the automation rule above in Data Center?

Let me know how it goes!

Thank you for your help so far!

I'm struggling to make this work with tickets from different projects. We can make it work between tickets in same project but want it to work for tickets that are linked but in different projects.

Any suggestions? :)

Is your rule restricted to just one project or does it cover multiple projects? To check this, you can go to the rule details.

Hi @indya kachela welcome to the community.
You could do this through automations.
You could do this using an add-on like scriptrunner.
I guess the answer here is yes you can achieve your above requirements.
Knowing your hosting type and if you have any add-ons installed would go a long way to helping you further.

Hi @Craig Nodwell

I believe we are a cloud hosting type but do not have scriprunner!

Since you are on Cloud you should be able to achieve this via automations.
There's some examples you can read through in the below links.
