Logging Time under a sub task

Shwetha Sundaramurthy May 21, 2025

Dear Members ,

Please help me , we should be able to log multiple time under a single sub task , for eg if a sub task is estimated for 2 days that is 16 hours , I should be able to log that 16 hours , split as and when i work on it during the sprint duration of 2 weeks that I work on it , so this becomes multiple work log entries on the same sub task .

Thanks,

Shwetha Sundaramurthy

Hello @Shwetha Sundaramurthy

That is possible with Jira out of the box.

Simply use the Log Work option on the specified subtask each time that you want to log the time you spent working on the subtask.

Time tracking must be enabled for your Jira instance, and you must have permission to log time against issues in the desired project.

Thank you @Trudy Claspill for explaining . I was using Work Log edit instead of Log Work .

Hi @Shwetha Sundaramurthy! 👋

Yes, what you're describing is absolutely possible in Jira — you can log multiple work log entries on the same sub-task over time (for example, a few hours each day across your sprint).

Here’s how to do it:

  1. Open the sub-task in a full-page view.

  2. In the top-right corner, click the "⋯" (More actions) menu.

  3. Select "Log work" — this allows you to add a new time entry.

  4. Repeat this as many times as needed throughout the sprint.

If you don’t see the Log work option, it may be hidden by a third-party app or a screen configuration — feel free to ask, and I can help troubleshoot that too.

Also, if you want a smoother, more flexible time tracking experience, take a look at JetTime — a privacy-first time tracking app built on Atlassian Forge. It keeps the Log work option always visible, supports timers, and adds powerful reporting and custom metrics, all without ever sending your data outside Atlassian's secure cloud.

Hello @Shwetha Sundaramurthy ,

Yes, it is possible to log multiple time entries on a single sub-task in Jira. Jira has native time tracking, which means you can add multiple work log entries over time by simply clicking Log Work.

If you're looking for an easier way to track time, I recommend trying the Time & Cost Tracker for Jira app from the SaaSJet team.

It makes time tracking easier with:

  • Quick logging from issue view or timesheets.
  • Clear reports by user, epics, sprint, etc.
  • Easy export of time logs when needed.

Track time effortlessly in Jira to boost team productivity
