Lost issues on creation of new board from existing board?

I created a new board from the drop down menu of the board. I was prompted to choose from:

  • Board from an existing project
    • (Boards can contain one or more projects.)
  • Board from an existing Saved Filter
    • (An advanced option using a JQL filter.)

I chose Board from existing project and a new board was created. But I didn't want the issues from the previous project, so I deleted them. Then I switched back to the original board (the parent of the newly created board), and no issues existed on the original board!  The message was:

No issues here

Create an issue or check the board settings

What am I missing? I would have thought that I could have created a new board, but  the issues would still remain on the old board, not get propagated to the new board, with the old board being an empty board.

I most certainly need them on the old board, so I'm not understanding the concept of creating a new board from an exisitng project. It seems like the issues from the existing project were removed from the existing project and propagated to the new project,,, where I deleted them thinking they would be retained in the existing/parent project. I'm new to this, so help me understand how it seems I've blown away a day's work, with a misunderstood menu option.

@David Pressley, first it is important to understand that a board is simply a filtered view of issues. The board’s filter, sub-filter (if Kanban) and quickfilters are what dictate what you see. It is like any other DB query that allows filtering just in a graphical view. So the creation or removal of any board will not delete any issues. So as long as you did not actually delete any issues they still exist. Now you do mention “deleting” so I need to ask if that is what you literally did. Do you have delete issue permission and did you actually delete? If so they are completely gone and must be recreated from memory or backup.

Now to check the queries of most boards do this - board > board settings > general and look at the board filter and sub-filter if present. Verify it reflects the issues you wish to see on the board.

Ahhh, I see now. An issue persists across any board I create, for a given project. Ugh. That means I deleted all of my issues/tasks/subtasks. Yes, I have delete permissions, because I'm the boss. I'm also the only employee, merely hacking my teeth on the Atlassian stuff, so only a few issues entered so far.  Just testing some stuff, trying to get a handle on organization and hierarchy for how best to work.

You are most welcome. If your question is now resolved be sure to click the checkmark above to accept solution as it helps others when they have a similar question. Also, I would recommend basically never deleting issues. They don't cause issues really.

Hi @David Pressley,

I'm sorry this happen to you! I blame the computer. You can certainly create multiple boards pulling the same issues. Did you double check that you did not delete the original board? You can simply go into your board configuration and edit the query. Once you identify the project in your query, the issues will reappear.

Hi @Mary Ramirez, No, I did not delete any board. It's as if creating a new board from an existing project effectively moved the issues from the original board to the new board, leaving the original board blank. In the newly created board, I deleted the "imported" issues, thinking I was only deleting them on the new board, but upon switching back to the old board, I realized there were *no* issues remaining on the original board. I'm not sure what you mean by

"You can simply go into your board configuration and edit the query. Once you identify the project in your query, the issues will reappear."

I'm new to this stuff, and am aware there is a ton of functionality under the hood, but at my current place in the learning curve, there's also a ton of stuff that's simply difficult to find or understand.

Thanks for your time
